SEVEN STATES OPTED TO RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE

In Arkansas, Alaska, Nebraska, and South Dakota, voters elected to raise the state minimum wage. Select counties in California and Wisconsin did the same, instituting plans to increase minimum wage as high as $15/hr by 2018. In Illinois, a nonbinding poll was added to the ballot asking voters if they felt minimum wage should be raised, which received an overwhelmingly positive result.

WASHINGTON ELECTED TO INTRODUCE NEW FIREARM LEGISLATION

In Washington (and likely in the wake of the recent and devastating Seattle high school shooting), voters elected to pass a new measure that extends the requirement of thorough background checks to private or unlicensed sales of firearms (like through Craigslist, or at gun shows). These background checks are designed to keep firearms from being sold to individuals who are already recognized by law as not being allowed to purchase or posses a gun (such as felons, those convicted of drug related crimes, and individuals who have been committed for certain mental health issues).

Again, it may be a long time before we see any of these changes actually happen, and some may be repealed before they even have the opportunity. That said, it`s certainly interesting to see how the face of this nation is constantly changing.
