Decarbonisation solutions are coming from around the world, including from some countries that don’t take up much space on a globe. Small in landmass and population but packing a punch, check out some of their highlights below as well as the activities of every country in the world on this map.

ICELAND: LAND OF FIRE AND ICE

For anyone that’s been to Iceland and had hot water come out of both taps, seeing Iceland on the list should be no surprise for its geothermal energy. It is also worth looking at some of the innovation they’ve done such as permanently sequestering carbon dioxide from geothermal plants by turning it into immobile rock. CarbFix — a partnership involving state-owned power company Reykjavik Energy, the University of Iceland, Columbia University’s Earth Institute, and France’s Center for Scientific Research — is currently being tested at a pilot site near the Hellisheidi geothermal plant, where it uses the island’s reactive basalt to permanently trap CO2 emissions. This could make geothermal energy production completely emissions free, which would have far reach implications to projects around the globe. Its also a nice intersection between two of our decarbonisation technologies - geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS).

THE BALTICS: WORKING TOGETHER UNDER THE SEA

So this is of course three different countries but in this case these neighbours are working together. Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are involved in some interesting work in the Baltic Sea, assessing the storage potential for carbon dioxide. You can read about it in this report and also look through the materials on the microsite for the BASTOR2 network. The BASTOR2 project studies the geological, technical, economic, legal, environmental and societal conditions for future carbon storage at a great depth below the Baltic seabed. Industry around the Baltic Sea coastline accounts for millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year so carbon capture and storage is seen a potential solution to this challenge. There is also some real progress being made in terms of renewable energy, with for example Estonia ramping up wind energy production.

NEW ZEALAND: CLEAN AND GREEN

As the backdrop for Middle Earth, you’d expect a good record on decarbonisation and that is what you get with New Zealand. Most of its energy comes from hydro, but nearly 20% comes from other renewables such as wind and geothermal. The World Energy Council considers New Zealand to be a "pack leader" in terms of both dimensional balance and overall ranking in its Energy Sustainability Index. New Zealand is the only non-European country in the top 10. With its increasing portfolio of wind energy, New Zealand is likely to continue moving up the ladder in this ranking.

SWITZERLAND: WEC`S LEADER IN ENERGY SUSTAINABILITY

A recent report by the World Energy Council (WEC) defined three dimensions of energy sustainability and ranked 129 countries. Switzerland rose to the top of the list based on its highly decarbonised energy sector, environmental sustainability and energy equity. Despite this ranking it does have some areas for improvement - its energy generation from wind and solar is quite low and much of its electricity is imported.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: CREATING THE CITY OF THE FUTURE

Finally, we go the Middle East, where one of the world`s largest sources of fossil fuels is also leading us to a cleaner future. Abu Dhabi in the UAE is home to 8 percent of proven global crude oil reserves and has enough hydrocarbon reserves at current production levels to last 100 years but is also driving innovation in decarbonisation. At the center of this is Masdar City - one of the most ambitious initiatives in the world in relation to more effective energy and water consumption and smart transportation. Masdar has the largest solar power plant in the Middle East and two carbon capture and storage projects. Housing organisations such as IRENA, Siemens, General Electric and Mitsubishi it is testing new climate change solutions that can be applied around the world.
