James Harrison is a 74 year old Australian whose blood carries rare Anti-D antibodies that have the power to protect newborns from Rhesus disease. Rhesus disease is a fatal condition that arise when a mother with blood type Rh-negative carries a foetus with blood type Rh-positive (incompatible blood types) resulting in triggering the mother’s immune system to react defensively and attack the baby’s blood during birth typically leading to death or severe brain damage.

James was inspired to donate blood when his life was saved from 13 litres of blood he received during the chest surgery for removing a damaged lung when he was 14. Starting at the age of 18, he continues to donate blood every 7 to 10 days. He has saved the lives of over 2 million babies. At age 74, he has been giving blood for 56 years and has donated blood for approximately 984 times and still continues with his good work.

His blood was used to develop a vaccine called Rho(D) immunoglobulin and since then his plasma has been used in every batch of vaccine produced.

His blood is so valuable that his life is insured for one million Australian dollars. He has been rightly named the ‘man with the golden arm’ and the ‘man in two million’.
